I went into this movie only knowing two facts – that it had 31% on Rotten Tomatoes and that it was a football horror movie. This latter fact was intriguing to me because I’m not sure I’ve every watched a movie on this specific topic. While I can see how it probably got 31% on Rotten Tomatoes (it wasn’t very horror), I honestly thought the cinematic fact of this movie was really good.
Coming out of the theater I was like “that was just like a long nike advertisement” and “it was just a long sport edit” (the ones you see on instagram and tik tok nowadays). And honestly I thought that was so cool. If this wasn’t supposed to be a horror movie, it would’ve been a fire football movie. My siblings and I also liked the other cinematic factors in it such as the sports facilities where this took place because those were some NICEEE facilities. Being a former athlete, I really enjoyed seeing those facilities and believe the movie was a good sports film for athletes.
Also, having been a former athlete and wanting to be a sports psychologist, “the horrors” of this film kind of had some risks/horrors of elite sports training which I thought was kind of important. What I mean by this is the blood doping scenes and the images of the brain when they bang their heads together, which could lead to CTE. Maybe if they had geared the movie towards this angle, it might’ve been better. But then again, people don’t want football to go away because of CTE (I like football too unfortunately) and maybe this is also a reason why people didn’t like it?
Anyways… I have been meaning to write this review for a minute but the tipping point for the reason I wrote it today is because the trailer for the “Reminders of You” movie came out today! And the lead actor from this movie also plays a lead role in that movie! That actually made me so excited because the casting for that movie looks really good. (And they had the orange truck in it – key detail!) Before watching Him, I hadn’t known of Tyriq Withers, and now I think he’s a pretty good actor and am excited for this new movie to come out soon!
