Lizzie wrecks me and I think Hughie might be the most gentlemanly character I’ve ever read about. Lizzie makes sense to me now – I get why she’s a “viper,” I get why she can’t stand Gibsie, and I get her darkness. Maybe this is a hot take, but Hughie might just be the best out of all the Tommen Boys.
Lizzie’s darkness is insane, no girl her age should have to go through what she’s gone through. No girl PERIOD should have to go through what she went through. The monster is fucking inhumane and heartless and holy shit how could he even do that to Caoimhe. Paired with Lizzie’s bipolar disorder and those hallucinations, not being able to tell imagination and reality apart, that poor girl went through so much in so little time.
Yet Hughie stayed through it all. Every single low and every single high. Through all her darkness because he could see her light. And I can’t blame him for letting her go at the end because he’s breaking his own heart by trying to protect it. And for his sake I want them not to get back together, but for Liz’s sake I hope they do. But imagine when he finds out what happened, I think that’s when the flip is gonna switch for him and that’s when he’ll try to work through things afterwards.
I thought that we’d get to read past the part about Claire finding Gibsie’s letter or even “not my monkeys, not my circus” part where Joey sees Hugh and Liz talking to each other, but we end way before that. I feel like the other books would get us past where the last book ended, but this one just didn’t. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I was slightly disappointed. But that also means all of this shit that hits the fan is about to come in the next book so I’m actually kinda scared for that. I think Releasing 10 was good to give us insight into the two characters because we didn’t see them together in the others and this allows us to see how deeply their love actually runs for each other. Deeper than most of us have the privelege of even feeling in our own lives. Someone let me know if this kind of love is even real. Chloe Walsh writes so well, making us fall in love with the characters and not even letting us hate the main characters despite their flaws. Such great writing skills.
